Senior Housing Support & ADUs

Habitat for Humanity ADUs

Over the past 14 years, Habitat Monterey Bay has built 9 ADUs, five of which are owned through a tenants-in-common ownership structure, providing the benefits of owned property with jointly managed and owned common utilities and land.

With the award of CalHOME funds from the state of California, we are able to offer more flexible financing for homeowners interested in building an ADU or JADU on their property for increased rental income, and creation of long-term affordable housing units.

My House My Home
Program

My House My Home is currently a partnership between senior homeowners, Habitat for Humanity Monterey Bay, and the City of Santa Cruz to build or renovate accessory dwelling units (ADUs) on the existing properties of senior homeowners.

According to AARP, 90% of seniors want to age in place remaining where they have made a home for years. Unfortunately, the most recent census data shows there are over 300 low-income senior homeowners in the City of Santa Cruz who are spending more than 50% of their monthly income on housing-related costs and are at risk of losing their home.

The crisis of high housing costs also impacts the local rental housing market. Santa Cruz County has been identified as one of the least affordable rental markets in the nation, with over 15,000 families currently on the Section 8 voucher waiting list. Of those who have received housing choice vouchers, over 400 families have been unable to find a landlord willing to accept the fair market rates offered under the program.

My House My Home program goals

  • Help low-income senior homeowners keep their property and age in place

  • Build a new or renovate an existing ADU on the property of senior homeowners to provide additional income and adjustable living accommodations to help them age in place.

  • Bring existing homes onto the rental housing market for low-income families.
